Time is not the best friend of road bitumen. Under the influence of atmospheric oxygen and sunlight, there is a change in the properties of this material, which is caused by an increase in the relative content of solid and brittle components, as well as a decrease in the amount of resinous and oily fractions. First of all, brittleness and hardness increase, which are the first signs of bitumen aging. In order to improve the performance properties of the material, it is combined with polymer additives.

 

It is possible to present a composition in which bitumen acts as a matrix, and a polymer is a dispersed phase. In the case when the amount of polymer injected is relatively small, the composition can be considered as disperse-strengthened.

 

The strength of the material is increased by preventing the spread of cracks in the matrix, which is provided by fine dispersed particles. As the polymer concentration increases, the overall composition may be considered resinous or fibrous. These compositions have high strength, elasticity and resist fatigue well. The latter quality is especially important in the context of ensuring the operational reliability of road bitumen.

 

On the basis of bitumen modified with polymers, mastics, sealants, waterproofing and roll roofing materials, as well as hydraulic asphalt polymer concrete are being prepared.

 

The quality of the received road and roofing coatings depends not only on the initial components, but also on the technology of bitumen modification. It is implemented in special equipment. In the process of polymer modified bitumen, the leading role belongs to a colloid mill, which performs not only the preliminary mixing of bitumen and polymer, but also homogenization.

 

Due to the design, specially developed for the modification of bitumen, the colloid mill implements another function – the grinding of components. This optimizes the installation design by eliminating the need for additional components. The mill is designed so that the grinding and homogenization is implemented in one pass, and the fineness of grinding is controlled by changing the gap between the rotor and the stator.

 

The USB-2 installations differ in convenience in practical operation as they realize any scheme of modification, and also work with all known polymeric additives and forms of their release.
